In the Reader’s Digest book Mysteries of the Unexplained, a much sharper version of the photo shows clear signs of photographic manipulation, especially along the sharp edge of the left “face.” (Affiliate Link)
Death notice for Michael Meehan and James Courtney posted in the San Pedro News-Pilot, Jan 12, 1925. The word “pet” in the second paragraph is a typo.
Another version of the deaths being reported (without the typo) from the Pomona Progress Bulletin, also from January 12, 1925. The identical wording suggests both papers were working from a press release, possibly from Cities Services or some shipping authority.
Los Angeles Times January 12, 1925 describes desperate attempt to rescue James Courtney and Michael Meehan, and the bravery of Chief Mate Kosti Taviola.

The SS Baldhill in Alaska, Aug 30, 1937. She is nearly identical to her sister ship, the SS Watertown.
The Dorade boxes suggest the photo was taken from the rear of the ship facing the forecastle.
